How CheckWatt Is Helping Nigerians Better Understand Their Electricity Bills

For many Nigerians, understanding an electricity bill can be as frustrating as paying it. Complex tariff structures, varying service bands, and limited public awareness of regulatory pricing often leave consumers unsure whether they have been billed correctly. The result is frequent disputes between customers and electricity distribution companies.

CheckWatt is working to make that process more transparent.

The company developed WATT?, which it describes as Nigeria's first free electricity bill auditor. The platform allows prepaid and postpaid electricity users to compare their bills against approved tariff rates under the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission's Multi Year Tariff Order (MYTO), while also accounting for the applicable 7.5 percent VAT.

Beyond verifying bills, WATT? includes an Area Band Finder that helps users identify the correct electricity service band for their location, reducing the risk of tariff misclassification. Where users believe they have been overbilled, the platform can also generate professionally written dispute letters that can be shared directly with their electricity distribution company through WhatsApp.

Since launching its beta version, CheckWatt says the platform has grown to more than 1,000 active users without paid advertising. The company also reports that its Area Band Finder has mapped 317 locations across Lagos. According to CheckWatt, its work has attracted public engagement from officials at EKEDC and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, while the company is also beginning to license its billing calculation engine through an API for business customers.

Looking ahead, CheckWatt plans to expand beyond a consumer facing platform into enterprise infrastructure for the energy sector. Its long term vision is to build a national transparency network that uses anonymised audit data to help utilities and regulators identify billing issues, improve customer experience, and strengthen confidence in Nigeria's electricity market.
