Spotlight on How GEM Educational Foundation Is Preparing Ogun State's Next Generation of Leaders

Every year, thousands of teenagers complete secondary school with academic qualifications but little preparation for the realities of adulthood. While schools focus on examinations, many young people receive limited guidance on leadership, career choices, financial literacy, emotional intelligence, and purpose discovery. GEM (Guiding Emerging Minds) Educational Foundation exists to close that gap.

Founded by Funmilayo Akinola, GEM was born from a personal experience. As a teenager, she often found herself searching for answers about life, purpose, leadership, and the future. Although she benefited from caring mentors, she recognized the absence of a structured system that intentionally prepared young people for life beyond the classroom. That realization eventually led to the creation of Teenagers Consult, which later evolved into GEM Educational Foundation.

Today, the organization is building a model that combines education with practical life preparation. Rather than limiting learning to academics, GEM equips teenagers with leadership skills, mentorship, career guidance, personal development, communication, and critical life skills that prepare them to become confident and responsible contributors to society.

Its programs are delivered directly where young people need them most. Through school outreach initiatives across secondary schools, students participate in conversations around leadership, character development, purpose discovery, and future planning. These engagements are designed to expose teenagers to opportunities and perspectives that many would otherwise never encounter during their formative years.

One of GEM's flagship initiatives is the Students Conference, an annual program that prepares secondary school graduates for the transition into higher education and adulthood. Beyond motivational talks, participants gain practical insights into leadership, decision making, personal growth, and navigating the opportunities and challenges that come after secondary school. The third edition of the conference is scheduled for August 1, continuing the foundation's commitment to raising future ready leaders.

The organization also hosts its annual Leadership and Entrepreneurship Boot Camp, where participants develop entrepreneurial thinking, financial awareness, teamwork, problem solving, and leadership capacity. By introducing teenagers to innovation and value creation at an early stage, GEM is helping shape a generation that sees challenges as opportunities to build solutions.

What distinguishes GEM Educational Foundation is its belief that adolescence is not simply a stage to pass through but a critical window for intentional investment. By focusing on the years when values, identity, and ambition are formed, the organization is creating long term impact that extends beyond individual students to families, communities, and the wider society.
